Above the Floor Cleaning Chemicals

Surface disenfection above the floor plays an important role in keeping your building clean and healthy. Above the floor surfaces are the areas that are touched most frequently by hands. Hand to surface contact is the primary source for  disease transmission. In fact, 80% of all common infections (colds, flu, diarrhea) are spread through the environment (air, water, food, fomites). Using green certified cleaning formulations will not only remove soil and bacteria, they help to lessen. You can look at our web site about Workplace Wellness for more informations.

What are Fomites?

  • Inanimate objects i.e. desk tables, door knobs, pencils, toilet seats involved in disease transmission. They are commonly known as “Critical Control Points” or CCP’s. Some facilities may call them People Contact Points or PCP’S. They may also be referred to as "germ hot spots".

Hand to Face Contact Plays a Key Role in Disease Transmission

  • Every 60 seconds, a working adult in an office touches as many as 30 objects
  • An adult brings his fingers to his face 18.5 times per hour (8 to nose, 8 to mouth and 2.5 to eyes)
  • 20% of the objects handled by a person with a cold have virus on them
  • Cold and flu can survive up to 72 hours on surfaces
  • Viruses which cause diarrhea can survive for 2-4 weeks on surfaces
  • Surfaces that Are Considered Critical

Control Points:

  • Bathroom fixtures
  • Phones, desktop surfaces
  • Counters, tables
  • Door handles
  • Light switches
  • All surfaces in contact with human fluids
  • Cleaning tools and equipment

Steps To Green Cleaning Above the Floor

Identify the critical control points in your facility.

  • One size does not fit all. Determine which surfaces need to cleaned with a disinfectant and which are a low risk for germ transmission.
  • Evaluate your current cleaning procedures and frequencies.
  • Are critical control points well identified? Is the frequency adequate to meet your cleaning standards?
  • Use green certified formulations to protect employees, occupants and the environment.
  • Use tools and cleaning procedures that remove both soil and germs. Microfibre cloths will enhance the ability to capture and remove the soil and bacteria. Using a colour coding system for your hand cloths is an added step you can take to reduce your risk of cross contamination. More Recent technologies also reduce the use of water and chemicals, another step to being kinder to the environment.
  • Ensure proper on-going training for all cleaning staff and educate the building occupants on good hygiene practices

How to Fold and Use Microfibre Hand Cloths

  1. Begin by folding the microfibre hand cloth in half. Then fold the cloth in half once more. The result is a cloth with eight sides and shaped to fit the size of your hand. Use the entire palm of your hand when wiping a surface. This ensures that there is maximum contact between the cloth and the surface
  2. When the side of the cloth is soiled, or when you are changing surfaces, open up the cloth and flip it over. Continue until all 8 sides have been used.

How to Clean Windows

  1. Dip your scrubber into your bucket. Scrub the window in large circular motions
  2. Use enough solution so that glass is wet
  3. Use your squeegee to remove the solution. Start by cutting a dry edge. This is done by placing the squeegee on the glass so that only one inch of the rubber touches the window. Start at the top of window and work your way down over lapping each stroke by about 1 ½ inches. Wipe your squeegee blade often for best results

How to Clean Mirrors

  1. For smaller mirrors, use a specialized glass cleaning microfibre cloth. Saturate the cloth with your green certified glass cleaner and work your way from the top to the bottom of the mirror
  2. For large mirrors, use a squeegee. Saturate the mirror with your Green Certified Glass Cleaner. Using your squeegee, start at the top of the mirror and work your way down overlapping each stroke by about 7 cm or 1 ½ inches. Wipe your squeegee blade with your glass cleaning microfibre cloth.
