According to studies, nearly one-third of the weight of your pillow is made up of dead skin, mites and microbes. Among these microbes (about 30 in all) you can find MRSA, C. difficile and E. coli, along with the flu and chicken pox viruses.
If you think about it, pillows offer the ideal conditions for germs to thrive. There’s body heat, dead skin, sweat, tears, coughing, sneezing – you name it. Unfortunately, changing your pillowcase is not enough because germs can easily travel through fabric. Pillows need to be washed on a regular basis.
Here are some easy pillow-cleaning tips that will help keep your pillows clean and fresh.
- Use dust mite pillow protectors to create an extra layer of protection.
- Change your pillowcases every 1 to 2 weeks.
- Regularly air out your bedroom by opening the windows for a few minutes, even in the winter. Fresh air will help to prevent asthma and allergy problems often caused by dust and dust mites.
- Wash your pillows in the washing machine 2 to 4 times a year. Always follow the manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations and read the label carefully before putting your pillow in the washer; some pillows require dry cleaning.
- If washing is not recommended, shake the pillow vigorously to ventilate it and expose it to direct sunlight and fresh air from time to time.
Just like toothbrushes, pillows should not be shared. They are your own personal item and you’re responsible for their hygiene.
